Week 10 - PSPC

I make the mistake of misreading things every now and again. This week was one of these occasions.

Michelle and I found ourselves standing, at the Expo Max Pavilion, in front of a small sign that stated that City Harvest had moved back to Jurong for two weeks, before their eventual shift to their new location at Suntec City. What I had misread, was the notice on their website the night before, thinking that this week would be their last week at Expo. AUGH!

We were faced with two options: go for the FCBC service, or find another church to go to. We both were not too keen on the FCBC one again, so we ended up heading all the way to Princep Street Presbyterian Church, a church Michelle had discovered while looking at churches online. Their claim to "fame" was that PSPC was the oldest existing church in Singapore.

Two MRT rides and quite a bit of a walk from Bugis later, we made it to PSPC just in time for the 11am service. It was an experience very similar to our previous week; very traditional, lots of hymns, lots of books. I was watching and copying what an old lady was doing by bookmarking the order-of-service-book-thingy, because we referred back to it very often throughout the service.

To be honest, I don't remember much of the service asides the communion. I mean, it was the same as always in all respects to my own worship and joy in partaking of it, but they served cups of red wine, not Ribena or grape juice. Sure, its a small cup, that thimble of a plastic thing, but I've not had such a "strangly warmed" experience at communion before - at least on the very physical side.

The sermon was given by one of the elders of the church (annnd that's strike 3), Elder Ho Yew Kee. He spoke on "Marketplace Theology: The Wealth Factor". Some excerpts below...

Treasure and Heart: The choice between God and money

Jesus acknowledged that money is important. However, he also stated that the first choice we had to make would be between God and money; and secondly, treasures on earth or in heaven.

The choices made will determine what you spend your life on, where your life will be poured out into. Treasures and fame on earth will always fade. God knows our hearts, and will reward hearts that choose rather, to build treasures in heaven; whose eyes are cast on the finishing of the race, and the crown of life at Jesus's side.

Challenge: Ask the right questions when you manage your life, and when you manage your money.

After the service we were "ambushed" by the befriender team. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad thing. I thought they were really nice indeed. It just somehow felt like an ambush that morning. Perhaps not being so formal (when saying hi to newcomers) isn't always a good thing?

Anyway, it was still an enjoyable experience. I did begin to feel rather worn out with visiting though. I'm looking forward to settling in a church soon.
